The PG-13 horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s is something I would recommend if you want to enjoy some childhood nostalgia and entertaining light horror.

The movie had good and bad elements; the CGI and costumes were impressive, but the script had some plotholes that didn’t align with the previously established lore. This movie focuses on a character named Mike Schmidt and his little sister, Abby. Mike is offered a security job at a closed-down pizzeria called ‘Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.’ The restaurant was said to have closed down in the 1980s due to the disappearances of many children while attending parties at the pizzeria. Mike does not realize when accepting the job offer that the animatronics in this pizzeria are possessed by the ghosts of the missing children from all those years ago.

The animatronics are suits worn by actors in this film. They are actual spring-lock suits that can stand on their own. The CGI of this movie is commendable. Animating expressions onto these suits and making a bloodthirsty cupcake able to fly in the air was an impressive element.

The acting was decent, maybe slightly dull and predictable in some instances, but overall, it was very well done. There was a lot of different lighting used in this movie, many stark and dimly lit scenes to help with the ambiance of the plot. The scenes in the pizzeria are usually dark and ominous, but there are also more lighthearted scenes in which the lighting is bright and joyful. For example, there is a scene where Abby, Mike’s little sister, is at the pizzeria with the animatronics. The lighting in this scene is bright to show the friendly and lighthearted relationship between Abby and the animatronics.

Overall, the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie had many great moments and a few not-so-good ones. This movie was highly anticipated by my generation specifically, and it was disappointing to see the lack of effort that was put in to align the plot with the lore of the video game itself.

I rate this movie a 7/10 due to its fun and nostalgic watch for people my age.
