Conflict at school is a common issue between students, leading to physical altercations that disrupt other students’ education.
Last year seniors Terrance Sandidge (left) and Jyaveion Green (right) pretend to fight in the hallway for a photo.
The security’s job is to protect the students, so breaking up physical altercations is all part of that.
“I feel like it’s an okay job. There are some fights that security guards don’t even know are happening,” Olivia Grayer said.
For students who end up in a physical altercation, there’s always a backstory and reason why the situation led to having to get physical.
“I feel like social media is a big part of fighting. A lot of people talk crazy on social media and talk about other dead family members, and they want to fight after that,” Malcolm Gillespie said.
If administrators or security detect a potential fight, they try to prevent it by having the students sign a contract. They are sometimes transferred to the alternative school if they fight after signing the contract.
“If I sign a contract and I still want to fight you, I’m going to fight you. They can prevent fights in school, but they can still happen outside of school,” Makayla Knight said.
When students get into a fight, they are normally suspended for the same amount of time, or one student might come back one day earlier.
“They were defending themselves. If they didn’t throw the first punch, they shouldn’t be suspended,” said Gillespie.
When fights happen, students often try to break them up because one of the fighters may be their friend.
“I feel like they have a good heart for trying to break up a fight, but some people could interpret it as you are trying to jump in the fight, then they jump in too,” Grayer said.
When two students or more have a physical altercation, most of the time, some verbal exchanges happen prior to the fight.
All students interviewed claimed that the security guards did an okay job preventing fights. But security obviously tries the best they can to break up a fight or even prevent a fight before it happens.
“The way to prevent a fight before it happens is to be very observative,” said Officer Cole.
